Authentic Philly Cheesesteak Recipe with Onions

Equipment

  • 1 griddle grill, electric griddle, or large skillet
  • 1 sharp knife and cutting board
  • 1 Spatula

Ingredients

  • 28 slices chipped steak frozen
  • 1 lb American cheese Cooper Sharp brand
  • 1 onion diced
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 4 tablespoon mayonnaise

Instructions

  • Heat griddle to medium heat. Dice onion.
  • Cook onion in a little olive oil or vegetable oil until slightly caramelized. Set aside.
  • On medium-high heat, cook the frozen chipped steak, chopping it up as it cooks. Add in cheese slices. Mix into meat until cheese is melted, creamy and mixed evenly into the meat mixture. Mix caramelized onion evenly into the meat mixture. Form the meat mixture into 4 even hoagie shaped rows.
  • Spread mayonnaise on the inside of a hoagie roll. Place the open roll on top of one of the rows of cheesesteak meat. Slide the spatula under the meat and lift the meat and roll up together while flipping the roll right side up. Serve immediately or save for later.

Notes

  • save leftover cheesesteaks in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days in the fridge.
  • reheat leftovers in the oven or air fryer.
  • these ingredients do not stand up well to freezing.
