Having been a Philadelphia native since the day I was born, I have had a lot of Philly cheesesteaks over my 30 years of life and I have taken all of that cheesesteak eating experience to create the most spot on, authentic Philly cheesesteak that I can teach you to make from home. I have made this recipe about 100 times over the past decade that I have been cooking and I feel confident in my technique in order to guarantee the most authentic Philly cheesesteak from home.

This easy Philly cheesesteak recipe is an excellent dinner option for a quick and easy weeknight dinner. It is a traditional cheesesteak recipe and is great if you want to bring the authentic flavors of Philly into your own home without having to travel. This delicious recipe is also a great option if you want to skip take out on a Friday night or enjoy a nice, cheesy cheesesteak during football Sunday game day.
This was inspired by my cheesy cheesesteak panini recipe on this site, and pairs well with this homemade potato chips recipe.

Ingredients
To make this authentic Philly cheese steak recipe, frozen chipped steak is used due to it's convenience and ease. Fresh, thinly sliced rib eye or fresh chipped steak from your local butcher can also be used. Cooper Sharp cheese and diced onion that is caramelized is mixed in with the meat.
For the roll, a fresh hoagie roll should be used. The best brand option in my opinion is an amoroso roll. Mayonnaise is also spread on the hoagie roll for extra flavor and a creamy texture.

- frozen chipped steak
- Cooper Sharp American cheese
- yellow onions
- mayonnaise
- hoagie rolls
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions

- Step 1: Heat griddle to medium heat. Dice onion.

- Step 2: Cook onion in a little olive oil or vegetable oil until slightly caramelized. Set aside.

- Step 3: On medium-high heat, cook the frozen chipped steak, chopping it up as it cooks. Add in cheese slices. Mix into meat until cheese is melted, creamy and mixed evenly into the meat mixture. Mix caramelized onion evenly into the meat mixture. Form the meat mixture into 4 even hoagie shaped rows.

- Step 4: Spread mayonnaise on the inside of a hoagie roll. Place the open roll on top of one of the rows of cheesesteak meat. Slide the spatula under the meat and lift the meat and roll up together while flipping the roll right side up. Serve immediately or save for later.
Hint: do not leave the cheesesteak mixture on the griddle for too long. The longer the cheese is in contact with the heat, the more it will overcook and begin to crisp up. You want to cook your cheesesteak mixture until the cheese is melted and creamy and then remove from the heat immediately.
Substitutions
- Cheese - if you cannot find Cooper Sharp cheese, replace it with any white American cheese or slices of provolone cheese. Cheez whiz can also be used if preferred
- Hoagie Roll - use gluten free rolls instead of white bread rolls to make this gluten free
- Vegetarian - use a plant based chipped steak product to make this recipe vegetarian
Variations
- Cheesesteak Egg Rolls - wrap the cheesesteak meat in egg roll wrappers and fry for a cheesesteak egg roll version
- Cheesesteak Bites - add cheesesteak mixture to biscuit cups and bake for a simple cheesesteak appetizer
- Cheesesteak Hoagie - add lettuce, tomato and raw onion for a cheesesteak hoagie recipe

Equipment
To make this recipe, you will need a flat top griddle grill or an electric griddle. A large frying pan, skillet or cast iron skillet can also be used. A spatula is also needed to make the cheesesteak mixture.
You also will need a sharp knife and cutting board in order to dice the onion.
How to Store this Philly Cheesesteak Recipe
Although this recipe is best fresh, leftovers can be stored wrapped in aluminum foil sandwich wrap or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. To reheat leftovers, bake in the oven at 350 degrees or cook in the air fryer until warm.
These ingredients don't stand up well to freezing due to the mayonnaise that is spread on the bun.
Top Tip
If using fresh sliced steak, make sure you buy a good quality cut of beef such as a tender ribeye steak or sirloin steak. Either of these are the best option due to their fat to meat ratio. Freeze the steak about 10 minutes before slicing to make it easier to slice and use a very sharp knife to assure a very even cut.
FAQ
Yes, bell peppers, specifically green bell pepper is a very popular option. For a little extra heat, hot peppers can be added. Mushrooms are also great additional toppings if preferred.
This is optional. I typically don't because I don't find I need to with the frozen chipped steak but if using fresh steak I do suggest seasoning it. I would keep seasonings simple, just salt, black pepper and garlic powder.
An authentic, good cheesesteak uses good bread that is very fresh, Cooper Sharp gooey cheese and chipped steak. Caramelized onions are also a typical ingredient in a classic Philly cheesesteak recipe.
