A quick and easy, high quality summer sandwich requiring just 10 simple ingredients perfect to wrap up, pack in a cooler and take to a beach day or boat day. This recipe has all of the elements of a charcuterie board sandwiched between slices of crusty bread. These prosciutto sandwiches requires minimal dishes to make and can be wrapped up and stored in the fridge for later, making it a great recipe to prep ahead of time.

This prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich recipe is the perfect sandwich to enjoy over the summer months. It is a great picnic lunch sandwich. It is great to prepare ahead of time and pack up in a cooler to bring for lunch for a day on the beach.
They are also great to make as a delicious sandwich to enjoy on football game day on football Sundays. This is also a great sandwich to make for lunch on a weekday or as a quick and easy weeknight dinner.
This was inspired by my Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwiches on this site, and pairs well with these crispy onion chips with copycat bloomin onion sauce and also pairs great with truffle fries.

Ingredients
Fresh sourdough bread is an extremely important part when it comes to the quality of this sandwich. The arugula is dressed in lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper for a pop of flavor and texture on the sandwich. Layered on top is fresh heirloom tomato, prosciutto slices and fresh mozzarella to make up the majority of the sandwich filling. To add a little savory tang and also a little sweet heat, a drizzle of both balsamic glaze and hot honey is added on top of the mozzarella before closing up the sandwich.
- sourdough loaf
- fresh arugula
- lemon juice
- extra virgin olive oil
- salt
- pepper
- heirloom tomato
- prosciutto
- fresh mozzarella cheese
- balsamic glaze
- hot honey
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
- Step 1: In a medium bowl, add arugula. Add in lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper and toss. Slice heirloom tomato.
- Step 2: Slice the sourdough loaf into 4 equal sections, then cut each in half to open the loaf. Pull out some of the bread in the center of the loaf.
- Step 3: Place seasoned arugula on the bottom piece of bread. Add a slice of tomato. Top with 2 slices of prosciutto. Pull apart the mozzarella ball and place on top of prosciutto.
- Step 4: Drizzle balsamic glaze and hot honey on top of cheese. Please top bread slice over the mozzarella to close the sandwich. Serve immediately.
Hint: use a good quality heirloom tomato for the tomato slices. Fresh, high quality heirloom tomatoes don't only add delicious flavor and freshness, but they also add a lot of texture.
Substitutions
- Mozzarella - substitute with vegan cheese for a dairy free option
- Bread - use gluten free bread instead of white bread buns to make this gluten free. A lot of times sourdough can work as a bread choice for those who eat gluten free but make sure the sourdough you are using is gluten free friendly
- Vegetarian - omit the prosciutto to make this sandwich vegetarian
- Balsamic Glaze - can be subbed out with balsamic vinegar. This is a thinner liquid based sauce so it is suggested to drizzle a little on the top or bottom slice of bread and let it soak in
Variations
- Caprese - make a gourmet sandwich with pesto, tomato and mozzarella for a caprese variation
- Spicy Fried Chicken - add crispy fried chicken with coleslaw, relish aioli and jalapeños for a crispy, spicy alternative
- Kid friendly - serve on soft white bread to make it easier for kids to enjoy or make the sandwich open faced. Add homemade potato chips on the side

Equipment
To make this recipe, you will need a sharp knife and cutting board, a sharp bread knife and a medium bowl.
How to Store a Mozzarella Prosciutto Sandwich
Store the completed sandwiches in plastic wrap or an airtight container in the fridge. Good for 1-2 days.
These ingredients don't stand up well to freezing after the sandwich is made. The bread, mozzarella and prosciutto can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 months.
Top Tip
For extra flavor, add a light drizzle of red wine vinegar on the top or bottom slice of bread and let it soak in to the base of the sandwich. A drizzle of olive oil is also a great way to add extra Italian flavors to this simple sandwich.
FAQ
Yes, on seach on TikTok - make prosciutto mozzarella sandwich and my recipe video should come up.
You should use fresh, creamy mozzarella. This will give you not only the best, most fresh flavor but it also provides a creamy texture. Blocks of artificial mozzarella are also more dense and will not fit well in the sandwich.
