Juicy, crispy, charred Italian sausage grillers that are grilled to perfection, caramelized onions all inside of a toasted potato bun to create the most simple, flavorful weeknight grilling meal. This recipe is perfect when paired with almost any sauce! Grillers with caramelized onions are literally one of my top 4 grilling recipes because oh my goodness talk about flavor. First of all, grillers are packed with so much delicious, juicy flavor its ridiculous. Once you add in the caramelized onions, you are just taking this whole meal to a new level.
Funny story about grillers. My Dad has been making these on the grill for a long, long time. I have such an extreme obsession with hot dogs (seriously, I have a problem) so I always just decided to eat the hot dog instead of the griller, naturally. As I got older, my obsession with hot dogs still continued, but I finally started branching out a little bit.
When I finally tried my first griller, I was kinda mad at myself because I had literally taken so long to try this delicious sausage product and it was just like a party in my mouth. I am literally salivating right now just from typing this.
The fun thing about grillers is that they are kind of just an open canvas and you really can do a lot of different things with them. They are so versatile and those are my favorite kinds of recipes. Just like a hot dog, you can dress it up however your heart may desire.

The Steps:
Let me tell you, these recipes are THE BEST! Why you might ask? Well, it requires barely any prep, is cooked outside on the grill, requires minimal ingredients and only takes a few steps!
To start, heat up your grill to medium heat. While the grill is heating up, slice your onions. You can either cook them before you grill your grillers or you can do it during. If you are doing it simultaneously while grilling, make sure you do not forget to occasionally check on your onions so they do not burn! To caramelize your onions, simply put them in a frying pan and add butter. Cook them on medium low. This will take some time depending on how caramelized you want them to be!
Add your grillers to the grill. I usually flip once every five minutes and keep them covered. I cook them until I reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees. When there is about 5 minutes left for the grillers to cook and they are nearing temperature, I will add the buns, open side down on the top of the grill so they can get a little toasty!
Once everything is cooked, add your griller to your toasty bun, add the onions on top of the griller, and top with the sauce or condiment of your choice!
Do I have to use Italian Sausage Grillers?
Nope! There are a ton of flavors to choose from! I like to use Italian Sausage grillers and dress them up in other ways. It kind of gives more of that open canvas feel.
What if I don't have a grill?
You can also cook the grillers on the stove, you just won't get that signature charred flavor that you get from the grill. It really is still a delicious choice though! You can also toast the buns a little in the oven to still get that flavor!
