This french onion burger recipe only requires 7 simple ingredients and everything can be cooked using the same pan saving you from a pile of dishes. This family favorite is a great meal for a weeknight dinner and most of the ingredients can even be prepared ahead of time.

French onion burgers are the perfect compliment to a summer barbecue. Mainly because it is a flavor profile that everyone usually enjoys and is very simple to make. It is a great pairing for Memorial Day weekend, July 4th weekend or Labor Day weekend barbecues. Could you also imagine biting into one of these while watching your favorite football team play on football Sunday? I know I can.
This was inspired by my Bacon Jam Burger on this site, and pairs well with this Grilled Mexican Street Corn side dish.

Ingredients
This burger uses 80/20 ground beef. The extra fat assures there is still some fat leftover after cooking and assures you have a very juicy burger. The meat is mixed with french onion soup seasoning and worcestershire sauce for an extra pop of flavor typical in a french onion soup. The burger is topped with provolone cheese.
Caramelized onions, the signature ingredient in french onion soup, are placed on top of the burger. The buttery brioche bun is toasted and then coated in creamy dijonnaise sauce, a flavor that compliments the other savory flavors of this burger and adds a little tangy flavor.

Instructions
- Step 1: Slice the onions. Add olive oil to a pan. Cook the onions on medium heat until caramelized, about 20-30 minutes.
- Step 2: Add ground beef to a medium bowl. Mix with the packet of onion soup mix and worcestershire sauce. Form 1 inch thick patties using your hands. Press a small dimple in the middle of the burger.
- Step 3: On medium-high heat, cook the burger. After 3-5 minutes, flip the burger. Top with cheese and cover. After 3-5 minutes remove burger from heat once desired internal temperature is met.
- Step 4: Toast buns on medium heat with a little olive oil. Add dijonnaise sauce to bottom bun. Place burger patty on top of the bottom bun. Top with onions. Place top bun over onions. Serve immediately.
Hint: add a dimple to the middle of each burger patty with your finger. This helps allow the meat to expand evenly during the cooking process which counteracts the burgers natural tendency to shrink. I share a lot of tips to keep your burger patties from shrinking on my site!
Substitutions
- Onion - instead of yellow onions, use sweet onions

- Vegetarian - the beef hamburger can be replaced with a plant-based burger to make this vegetarian
Variations
- Honey Sriracha Burgers - change up the toppings and sauce for a honey sriracha blue cheese burger

Equipment
To make these french onion burgers, you will need a frying pan, a sharp knife and cutting board, a medium or large bowl, and a meat thermometer if you want to test the temperature of your meat. If you want to grill burgers instead of cooking them on the stove, you will need a gas grill, charcoal grill or pellet grill.
How to Store French Onion Soup Burgers
Store leftover burger patties separate from leftover caramelized onion in their own airtight container. Any leftover burger buns can be stored in a resealable bag. Burger patties are good in the fridge for up to 3 days. Onions are good in the fridge for up to 1 week.
These ingredients do stand up well to freezing. The burger patties can be frozen for up to 2 months. Burger buns can be frozen for up to 3 months to maintain freshness.
Top Tip
To melt the cheese without overcooking your burger, steam the cheese. This can be done if cooking on the stove. To do this, after adding the slice of cheese on top of the burger, pour a very small cup of water into the pan and cover immediately. This will steam the cheese and cause it to melt perfectly on top of your juicy burgers.
FAQ
Yes, your burger patties can be baked in the oven. To do this cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the burgers on top of the parchment paper. Bake at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until your burger reaches your desired internal temperature.
If you want a rare burger, cook the internal temperature to 125 degrees. For medium rare, cook to 135 degrees internal. Medium doneness should be cooked to 145 degrees. Medium well should be cooked to 155 degrees internal and a well done burger should be cooked to 160 degrees. 160 degrees is considered the minimal temperature for meat that is safely cooked but many prefer their burgers to be cooked medium rare or medium.
I personally prefer brioche buns. I find the added buttery flavor to marry with the french onion soup and burger flavors very well. A potato bun or onion bun are also great options. An onion bun might sound like it would be too much flavor but typically onion buns are mild overall with a little pop of onion flavor.
