Sweet and Spicy Barbecue Wings. The most delectable sweet and spicy barbecue sauce coating some crispy, air fried chicken wings finished off with a tangy blue cheese dip for the most perfect wing experience imaginable. If you have ever met my fiancรฉ you would know about his deep obsession with wings. He loves wings of all kinds and has come up with some killer sauces. Well here I am, finally sharing one! I have to give Nate a lot of credit here, he is the mastermind behind the sauce, I just did the air frying! That's the cool thing about how we develop recipes, we do it together quite often.
My wing story is quite funny actually. I always liked wings, but I have definitely learned to like them a lot more since Nate and I started dating. I think it is because I never ordered any appetizers except mozzarella sticks for the longest time. Nate on the other hand tries to get his hands on wings whenever he could.
We are huge football fans and wings are definitely one of our favorites when it comes to game day appetizers. Since we started air frying them, we have had an awesome experience. Not only do the wings become nice and crispy like they would in a fryer, but they also leave about one fourth of the mess compared to frying! Great on a lazy Sunday!
Ingredients:
- chicken wings
- ketchup
- barbecue sauce
- brown sugar
- honey
- Frank's Red Hot Sauce
- Worcestershire sauce
- garlic powder
- crushed red pepper flakes
- Marie's Blue Cheese Dress
- Fresh blue cheese crumbles to garnish
Kitchen Appliances:
The Steps:
In a sauce pan, add ketchup, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, honey, Frank's Red Hot Sauce, garlic powder, crushed red pepper flakes and Worcestershire sauce. Heat on medium low while whisking together the ingredients. Simmer on medium low for about 10 minutes. Turn the burner on low while you cook the wings.
Place the wings in the air fryer, if frozen cook for 14 minutes at 380 degrees. If not frozen cook for 10 minutes at 380 degrees. Flip halfway through. Once done, cook again skin side up at 400 degrees for 7 minutes to get an extra crisp. Toss the wings in the sauce in a mixing bowl. Serve with blue cheese dressing and with blue cheese crumbles sprinkled on top.
Can I use ranch to dip instead of blue cheese?
The answer to that question in my humbled opinion is always! I especially love ranch with barbecue based sauces when it comes to wings. I think the creamy, herby pairing to the sweet barbecue is perfection! Whenever I have a little spice though, my heart goes straight to blue cheese!
Can I fry or bake my wings if I don't have an air fryer?
Absolutely! Baking will obviously be a little more healthy than frying. When you fry them though you are definitely going to get a crispier wing. It really depends on what you are going for! If you are baking them, I suggest broiling the wings a little bit at the end if you have a broiler. That adds the little crisp that you will be missing.
